Every number here is off the drawing rather than off a finished tool. Name the radius and the grade you want and the drawing comes back with your numbers on it.
The scale is printed into the arm rather than stuck on, graduated every millimetre and numbered every ten, and the pivot has enough friction to stay where you left it while your hands are wet.
Why it is shaped like that
Two separate calipers means two numbers to keep track of, and the lid that fits is the one where they were the same number. One pivot removes the arithmetic.
Living with it
- The friction in the pivot is adjustable by a quarter turn. Set it once, at the start.
- A wipe across the numerals keeps them readable; the scale is printed into the arm, so it stays there.
