Throwing Rib R60

The rib most throwers reach for first, and the one that decides whether a cylinder comes up straight or bellied.

  • The R60 face, flat on the bench.
  • Where it spends its life: against a wall, mid-pull.
  • 118 mm, which is a hand and a bit.

Every number here is off the drawing rather than off a finished tool. Name the radius and the grade you want and the drawing comes back with your numbers on it.

A 60 mm convex face rides the wall, a 25 mm shoulder radius takes the turn into the base, and the single-sided bevel means it cuts on the way up and burnishes on the way down. Ask for it in any of the five grades and it becomes a different tool without changing shape.

Why it is shaped like that

A rib flatter than the pot only touches it in one place, so the wall thins where the rib bites and stays fat everywhere else. R60 is drawn to sit along a mug-sized cylinder rather than across it.

Living with it

  • Rinse it while the slip is still wet and the edge stays glass-smooth for the next pot.
  • Store the soft grades flat and they hold their curve for years.
  • It is dishwasher-safe on the bottom shelf, and nothing about it minds being left in a bucket of water.

Made to order

Make one that fits your hand.

Send the code and the grade, or a photograph of the curve you want. A dimensioned drawing comes back the same working day, and nothing is printed until you say yes to it.
